Renfrewshire MP hails veterans and troops on Armed Forces Day 2010

Douglas on Armed Forces DayPaisley and Renfrewshire South’s local Labour MP Douglas Alexander today hailed local people who are serving or have served in our armed forces, as well as their families - and thanked them for their dedication, courage, commitment and sacrifice.

This year’s Armed Forces Day is taking place on Saturday 26 June. The day is an annual opportunity for the whole nation to show support for the men and women who make up our Armed Forces community: whether that is currently serving troops, their families, or our veterans and cadets.

Across the country, including in Renfrewshire, people are getting involved by holding local events – or at the very least just by making clear their support.

In his previous role as Secretary of State for International Development, Alexander regularly visited and met with troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq – and was often able to personally thank troops from Paisley and Renfrewshire for what they were doing.

Douglas Alexander MP said:

“I have seen at first hand the incredible job the men and women of our armed forces are doing in places like Afghanistan, both to ensure our national security – and help make a difference in some of the most challenging environments in the world.

“Our armed forces are busy working around the world day in day out, promoting peace, supporting stabilisation, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism.

“Renfrewshire has felt the pain of the sacrifice of our troops and their families - and so I was proud that the Labour government established this important day to honour our troops, veterans and their families.

“From talking to our forces overseas, I know how much difference it makes for them to know that local people are supporting them. Armed Forces Day provides a much valued morale boost for the troops and their families, and I would encourage people in Renfrewshire to once again show their support this year.

“Local people can find out more ways to get involved by visiting www.armedforcesday.org.uk”
