CAR SCRAPPAGE SCHEME REACHES END OF THE ROAD

27 Jan 2010

DOUGLAS ALEXANDER MP ENCOURAGES MOTORISTS TO TAKE PART IN CAR SCRAPPAGE SCHEME

With funding running out for the car scrappage scheme, Douglas is encouraging Renfrewshire’s motorists to take part.

There is now less than 82,000 funding for new vehicles orders left for individuals and families to take advantage of the scheme, as it nears its end. Recent figures show that more than three quarters of the budget for the Labour Government’s hugely successful scrappage scheme has already been used, boosting UK car sales and helping the car industry through the downturn.

Douglas said:

“The Government’s car scrappage scheme has offered real value for motorists and has helped keep our car industry going during these tough times. It shows how the Labour Government is investing through difficult times to give help to people and protect jobs and businesses.

“It’s welcome news that the scrappage scheme has been taken up by so many people, helping to support our automotive manufacturers through a very difficult time.

“I would urge local people who are thinking about taking advantage of the scrappage scheme to put their orders in as soon as possible as time is running out to get a great deal on a new car by trading in your old one.

Lord Mandelson, Labour’s Business Secretary said:

“Industry figures have reflected the success the scheme has already had, boosting both car sales over the past few months and maintaining jobs in car production. We expect the impact of the scheme to continue to be felt into 2010 as deliveries will continue after the scheme closes.”
